Dealing with awful bosses and mean colleagues is an achievement worth celebrating. If you have been practicing the strategies I shared with you in the previous article, you are dealing with them well. In so doing, you are definitely paving the way for your success.

In addition, you should nurture mindfulness-based habits that will augment your success and help you maintain it.

In this post, I’ll share with you 5 mindfulness-based habits you should build to become and remain successful in life. If you adopt these habits and practice them consistently, you will move towards higher levels of growth and prosperity.

Let’s dive right in:

#: Practice thought attentiveness

On average, we have around 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts daily. Researchers believe that as much as 95% of these thoughts are more or less similar. In simpler terms, most of your thoughts are automatic.

Unfortunately, most of these thoughts are negative and self-sabotaging. Self-sabotaging, negative thoughts eat away at your wellbeing; they cause you to ignore your potential.

For instance, we tend to see things in white and black. If your boss admonished you mid-meeting, you might conclude it’s a testament to your failures. At such times, it is easy to quickly discount all the positives associated with a situation and ignore virtues. You may just find it easy to focus on the cons of a problem or your weaknesses.

Additionally, we are often quick to jump to negative conclusions without deliberate thought. All these negative thoughts can wreak havoc in your mind and keep you from finding and honing your potential. They may also make it hard to pursue your ambitions.

Mindful people are likely to do things a little differently:

They choose to focus on any negative/disturbing thoughts patiently, acceptingly, and nonjudgmentally.

This deliberate act helps them identify the root causes of the issue. In so doing, they have a chance to replace the negative self-talk with positive suggestions.

You need to do the same as well.

You need to adopt the habit of tactfully tuning into your thoughts every few minutes. Once you tune in, focus on the toxic ones, dig deeper into them, and deliberately replace them with healthy substitutes.

The more you do this, the easier it shall be to nurture a healthy, growth mindset. With a growth mindset, you can invite growth opportunities your way and achieve one feat after another.

#: Nurture curiosity

Nurturing mindfulness provides a fertile ground for curiosity to thrive, and interest is one of the secrets to lasting success.

Here is why:

Curiosity makes you more aware of different techniques, information, ideas, emotions, options, and initiatives around you. This awareness is likely to trigger a series of actions that take you closer to your desired success.

Take an instance where earlier, you had ignored an opportunity, deeming it unnecessary. Once you become mindfully curious about it, you analyze it from different perspectives. From there, you may probably find an angle that can serve you.

To become successful and remain so, commit to being more curious about everything and everyone, even yourself. Pay attention to how others do things and ask questions that help you learn something you didn’t know. Reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and ponder what you wish to do and achieve in life. Show genuine interest in how your team members and those around you feel, and inquire about their feelings. Cultivating the habit of being curious can help you:

  • Delve deeper into things
  • Develop a profound level of understanding of processes and systems
  • Experiment with new ideas
  • And embrace growth opportunities

All these, as you can imagine, increases the chances of continued success.

#: Embrace imperfection and settle for good enough

Besides being a myth, perfectionism is one of the biggest enemies of happiness and productivity. When you seek perfectionism, you focus more on being better the next time and less on embracing the moment. You also become overly critical of yourself, and instead of pursuing self-development, you engage in self-sabotaging behaviors.

To become and remain successful in life, you need to work on this. Instead of chasing perfection, you need to adopt the mindfulness habit of embracing imperfection.

Generally, that calls on you to invest all your focus, time, energy, and potential in a task at hand. What’s more, you accept whatever results you get. Once the results are in, you analyze them and your performance, identify the weak links and improve them. Of course, you do that mindfully without being harsh to yourself.

Over-scrutiny impedes your progress, increases procrastination, and undermines your motivation. Since you want to be successful in your personal and professional life, embrace your imperfections.

Let’s assume you plan to work for 5 hours today but end up working for 3 hours only. First, you MUST acknowledge the effort and then work towards improving the next day.

Even if you are only able to achieve 50% of the sales target, pat yourself on the back. Do that before devising a new plan to fulfill your goal.

If you habituate this in your life, you are likely to progress towards your targets systematically.

#: Become process-oriented

None of us can dispute that keeping your eyes focused on your goals is a recipe for success. While that may be so, it’s equally important to engage yourself in the process that yields the results.

Mindful people are process-oriented; they immerse themselves in the goal achievement process. Instead of becoming frantic about achieving the goal at the set time, they endeavor to enjoy every step.

As you work towards achieving a particular goal, you will encounter countless obstacles, many of which can block your path. Stressing too much about the problems and reaching your destination on time might demotivate you and kill your mojo. A workable fix for this is to engage in the process and take it one step and one moment at a time.

Keep your eyes on the big picture, yes. However, involve yourself in every task, step, and phase of the process that drives you towards the big picture. By doing this, you will always be aware of why you want to achieve what you want to achieve. This will undoubtedly give you the willpower to keep going.

#: Engage in self-care

Self-care is vital to your physical and mental wellbeing. When you fail to practice preemptive self-care, chronic fatigue and burnout may take root in your psyche. All these may curtail your chances of prosperity in life.

Mindfulness is about being aware of the present moment. You must endeavor to become knowledgeable and attentive to your needs in the present moment. In any case, you only exist in the present moment.

Start looking after your physical, emotional, and mental needs by doing the following:

  • Take care of your diet and eat healthy, nutritious foods
  • Sleep for 7-9 hours every day
  • Become physically active and adopt the habit of exercising for 15-30 minutes every day
  • Start engaging in pleasant and calming activities
  • Make time to be by yourself and with loved ones, and
  • Start distancing yourself from toxic influence so that you can build a healthy support system.

By putting everything you’ve learned in this post into action, you are likely to become emotionally stronger, optimistic, and grittier.

All these will work together to help you climb higher up the success ladder.
